What Is Coconut Oil

Open Coconut

Mmm Coconuts..

Coconut oil is an oil that is taken from the meat of a mature coconut which is harvested from a coconut palm. You may be surprised to find out that coconut oil is the primary source of fat for millions of peoples diets around the world and has been for many generations. It’s primary use is in food, but it has other amazing applications in medicine. The oil of a coconut is slow to oxidize and is resistant to rancidity (decomposition) which means it can be good to use for up to two years.

Coconut oil can be extracted from the coconuts using either a dry or a wet process. The dry process means the meat is extracted from the shell and then dried using fire or sunlight. The wet process is more complicated and requires the use of equipment. Todays techniques with this process use treatments with cold, heat, acids, salts and others to break up the protein in the coconut. It’s a strange process that I don’t full understand, but all you need to know is that the dry process is the preferred due to higher yield even though the dry process has many losses from spoilage and pests.

Best Types of Coconut Oil

Refined or Unrefined

You have a number of different labels for coconut oil. Should you buy virgin or extra-virgin? Is refined better than unrefined? What’s the difference? The first decision you have to make when shopping for a good coconut oil is whether you want a refined or unrefined coconut oil. A refined coconut oil is the most used form of coconut oil around the world. However this doesn’t mean it’s the oil you want for the best oil pulling benefits. Refined coconut oil is mostly tasteless and odorless because it has been “refined” or processed. They are mostly made for cooking oils, so you don’t need to raw organic flavor and taste. So while refined coconut oil is still a great source of fatty acids, the health benefits of an unrefined virgin and raw coconut oil far outweigh those of the processed form. So when shopping for a good coconut oil for use with oil pulling, remember choose the unrefined brand!

Cold-Pressed, Expeller-Pressed and Centrifuged

The most important thing when selecting a coconut oil is that you get the raw unprocessed oil that hasn’t been greatly changed in order to make it last longer. Whenever you start to heat the oil up, you change it’s properties and remove a lot of what makes it amazing for oil pulling. Expeller and Cold pressed coconut oil can be put through a lot of heat during the extraction process. This gives it more “flavor” but can take away some of the benefits that a centrifuged oil that is most likely unheated or heated at a much lower temperature. Centrifuged oil has a much more mild and delicate taste.

Virgin or Extra-Virgin; What’s the Difference?

Sounds like pretty much the same thing, right? Well the virgin coconut oil is typically pressed from the flesh of high quality coconuts. You always want to choose a brand that is labeled as some type of virgin. However, it’s not important what type of virgin it is. Same as olive oil, the “extra” in extra virgin coconut oil is just a marketing strategy to make you think you are getting more benefit for your money. Both of these types of oils are simply filtered and packed. There is nothing that is added or taken away.

The fact that a coconut oil is a virgin (or “extra-virgin”) is the most important thing when selecting a brand of coconut oil. Another factor that determines what your oil tastes like has to do with the source from which it came from and the soil and climate conditions where it grew.
